Many colleagues who view the current economic situation consider self-employment as a job opportunity . At first it is normal to feel lost and not knowing what steps or procedures to follow. In my case, I don’t consider myself an expert, far from it. But knocking on many doors and the accumulation of errors have helped me to gain experience and I would have liked someone to help me or at least make things easier.
For all this, it has occurred to me to write a series of articles in which I hope to give some ideas and, above all, to answer questions about what to do when we choose to work on our own. And I follow a maxim, with effort and enthusiasm everything is achieved.
Note: and if you plan to go abroad, see this article on how to work as a dietitian in the UK .
First step, I finished the race And now what?
That the employment situation is complicated is not necessary or mentioned, so to finish the race, conduct interviews, find your first job and move up in the same company throughout life now only seen in the movies.
The reality is that we find that we have finished, there are no job offers, and the few that there are are an attack on work dignity, so if after sending 30 resumes a day without answer you realize that it is not so simple, do not come down and change the chip .
The first mistake of a recent graduate / graduate in almost any subject is to think that by the fact of having studied a career you know everything, then you come to the real-world of work and you realize that: 1. You really have no idea, 2. You have to do things that you were not prepared for and 3. There are people without qualifications doing your job (and some even do it well). We could make another article only of “common mistakes” in which all, or almost all of us have fallen, but that is part of the learning and you have to realize for yourself.
So here are some practical tips to channel those hard beginnings:
1 .- Keep training : This is drawer, if you want to continue growing professionally you have to specialize and constantly update . Do not think that by finishing the race you have already learned a “trade” and you only have to perform it for the rest of your life. Science does not work that way. Even some “absolute truths” that you learned during the race then you realize that they are more than questionable.
It is clear that a master’s or postgraduate degree that would be ideal is not available to everyone, except if you are not working, but there are countless courses, presentations, much more affordable or free workshops that you can go to. Of course, be critical, search, compare, meet the speakers and if you think it’s worth it, sign up .
Another very valid option is self-training , that is, reading scientific bibliography, books, manuals, everything that may interest you and is up to date.
2.- Become a member: If your autonomous community has an association or professional association, it is advisable to join. It is a good way to be aware of the news of the profession, organize many training events and usually have a job.
3.- Establish professional relationships: Participate in social networks, visit websites, read blogs, participate, ask questions. In Spain there are very good professionals carrying out very good ideas, know them . It may help you to shape your own idea but, above all, to realize that you are not alone and there are many colleagues fighting to get their projects forward.
4.- Create your own professional brand: If the work does not reach you, you will have to go looking for it.
The first thing is to make yourself known : a blog, profiles on social networks or even a personal website. Surely you have many ideas to contribute, don’t be afraid to start. Interact with other professionals. Or just make yourself business cards and share them with friends and family. The case is to create your small client portfolio.
Visit different centers, gyms, pharmacies, schools, associations, whatever you can think of. Offer your services for internships, organize workshops, training talks, etc. You would be surprised how many people are interested in learning topics related to food. Who better than a nutrition professional to carry it out?
The important thing is to get experience and let go.
And finally … if you already have an idea and believe in it. Start! Establish a project, look for financing and go ahead. But we’ll talk about that in the next article.
